• Hi there, Pirates!

First, I'd like to welcome everyone to a new school year! 2019-20 is going to be the best year yet!! Since joining the HCS family in late August of 2018, I have enjoyed getting to know you and your children. Harrisville Central School has been one of the most welcoming communities I have ever experienced. There is a true sense of school and community pride, full of folks working tirelessly for the good of our children. It is my pleasure to work within such a supportive, caring and innovative school community.

Even though I have met many of you, I would like to take the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself. As a child, I was born and raised in the Albany area of New York State. There, I graduated from Heatly School in 1989, having been involved in many extracurricular activities...my most favorite was playing basketball (which I did through my freshman year in college). Upon graduation, I attended SUNY Potsdam where I earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and English Literature, followed by a masters degree in Reading.

Over the course of 22 years, I worked as a substitute teacher, teaching assistant, classroom teacher (grades K, 2, 3, 4, 6), and an instructional math coach with BOCES. This is the fifth year of enjoying my profession as a school administrator.

Several years ago I had the pleasure of working in Harrisville CSD once each week as an instructional coach. The experiences and connections made here during that time helped shape me into the educator and leader I have become today. That is why I was so eager to have an opportunity to return. And I am very humbled by and grateful for this opportunity.

Currently, I live in Hannawa Falls with Jamie, my husband of 25 years, who is also an educator/school administrator and our 13 year-old son, Lucas and our rescue pup, Sammy. We also have two grown children, Dan (24) and Leah (21) who are off making their mark on the world.

Many find it interesting that I choose to drive such a distance to get to work. The truth is, there are several folks working at HCS who drive that distance, and further, to get to work each day. It is definitely more convenient to work close to home...but for those of us who live far away, it's well worth the drive each and every day. HCS is a special place and I am proud to be a PIRATE!

I would like to make this page a good source for families to include elementary-specific information. My goal is to connect the Pirate Press newsletters to a link here on the Principal's Page. Please look back from time to time to see what changes/additions have been made.

Please know I value you, your child, our school and this community. I welcome your input, questions and feedback, as effective communication is the key to our children's success.

    Always with #PiratePride,

    Mrs. Kate Cruikshank
