Introduction
=
Everyone
involved with athletics at
=
To
help students take advantage of our programs, this Athletic Handbook has be=
en
developed to help answer questions that might arise during the school year.=
Rationale
Participation in
interscholastic competitions is made available to students as an enhancemen=
t to
the academic program of the school.
Athletes, team managers, and cheerleaders are expected to represent
their school in a positive and dignified manner and to maintain a full effo=
rt
towards the completion of their studies.&n=
bsp;
This athletic policy is designed to provide athletes with guidance a=
nd
direction for standards of behavior.
In addition to the guidelines provided here, coaches, with the appro=
val
of the administration, may require other standards as are needed and
appropriate for the sport and level of competition involved. These will be supplied to athletes=
by
coaches prior to the start of the sport season. Playing athletics is a privilege
extended to some students; and the school may remove this privilege and all
other student privileges for five weeks as required to maintain order to in=
sure
the common good of all students.

THE TEAM PRIOR TO THE START OF EACH SPORT SEASON.
I. &=
nbsp; Attendance
Policy - All
students are expected to be in attendance everyday.
1) A
legal excuse must be provided for not attending school on the day of a game,
for example, doctor appointment, DMV appointment, legal counsel, sickness, =
etc.
2) Students
must be in attendance ½ day (11:30) to participate in practice or ga=
mes
unless they have a legal excuse.
3)
Students will not be able to leave school without a legal excuse to =
be
eligible to participate in practice or games.
II.&=
nbsp; &nbs=
p;
Dress
Code
The District stron=
gly
suggests athletes represent the school in an appropriate manner with their
dress and appearance.
Boys: Dress pants or nice jeans, with no
holes; colored shirts or sweaters.
Girls: Appropriate length skirt, good jea=
ns or
dress pants with no holes; appropriate tops
Both: No sweatpants, sweatshirts, t-shir=
ts,
hats, flip-flops.
Note: This code is above the regular sch=
ool
dress code that must already by followed.
III.=
Athletic
Substance Abuse
We recognize that =
drugs,
tobacco and alcohol are illegal substances for under-age individuals. Use,
possession of, or being issued a court appearance ticket related to a drug =
or alcohol
offence will cause the following consequences. A suspension means to be ineligibl=
e to
play in a league, non-league or tournament game. Scrimmages do not count toward
suspension.
First Offense
1)&n=
bsp;
Two-Game Suspension - This suspension
must be fulfilled before another athletic contest can be participated in.
2)&n=
bsp;
Counseling - The athlete shall receiv=
e mandatory
counseling.
3)&n=
bsp;
Practice - The athlete is expected to
participate in all practices.
4)&n=
bsp;
Games - During the suspension, the
athlete is expected to attend all contests with the team, sit on the bench,=
but
not dress in uniform.
5)&n=
bsp;
Loss of Privileges – The athlete
will lose school privileges for five weeks.
6)&n=
bsp;
Upon suspension, parents will be noti=
fied
in writing outlining the offense and punishments.
Second Offense

Five-Game Suspension - This suspension
must be fulfilled before another athletic contest can be participated in.

Counseling - The athlete and parent w=
ill
be required to receive counseling before they are eligible to participate in
another contest.
3)&n=
bsp;
Practice - The athlete is expected to
participate in all practices.
4)&n=
bsp;
Games - During the suspension, the
athlete is expected to attend all contests with the team, sit on the bench,=
but
will not be allowed to dress in uniform.
5)&n=
bsp;
Loss of Privileges – The athlete
will lose school privileges for an additional ten weeks.
6)&n=
bsp;
Upon suspension, parents will be noti=
fied
in writing outlining the offense and punishments.
Third Offense
1)&n=
bsp;
The athlete will be dismissed from all
athletic events for the remainder of the calendar school year, and the athl=
ete
must receive and complete an extensive counseling service before becoming
eligible again.
2)&n=
bsp;
Loss of Privileges – The athlet=
e will
have no school privileges.
3)&n=
bsp;
Upon dismissal, parents will be notif=
ied
in writing outlining the offense and punishments
IV.&=
nbsp;
Quitting
of a Team
If a student athlete decides to leave a team for any rea=
son,
he/she will:
1)&n=
bsp;
Promptly notify the coach
2)&n=
bsp;
Return all equipment and uniforms
3)&n=
bsp;
Obtain a release from the coach
indicating that requirements above have been satisfied to be eligible to pl=
ay
next sport; and
4)&n=
bsp;
If a player decides to quit during a
contest, the actual action should be done at the end of the contest in a
courteous manner with the coach.
Failure to comply with this may result in the student's ineligibility
for participation in the next sport at the discretion of the coach, Athletic
Director, and High School Principal.
V. &n=
bsp; Vandalism/Stealing
If a student athle=
te
is found guilty of committing vandalism or theft, that student will pay
restitution for the act and then consequences will follow the
consumption/possession policy for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd offense.
VI. Proce=
dure
for Monitoring Athlete’s Performance
1.
The Athletic Director will prepare =
a form
to be distributed to all teachers that will have a series of reporting
dates two weeks apart =
(in
the manner of the weekly evaluation sheet) and that will have a list of all
students on
all teams.=
On these, teachers will be able to
express their concern about any student currently on a team.
2. &n=
bsp;
Biweekly,
all teachers will look over the list and highlight or otherwise mark any
student about whom they are concerned and will, hopefully, indicate about w=
hat
they are concerned. These con=
cerns
can be academic (any concern, not only failure), behavioral, etc. If the concern is academic, specif=
ic
averages would be helpful, but are not necessary.
3. &n=
bsp;
These
will be handed in to the Athletic Director who will sort out and distribute
them to the individual coaches who will address the problems as they see fi=
t.
4. &n=
bsp;
At
the five and ten week reporting periods, the regular academic eligibility
policy will take effect. The =
intent
is that with early intervention there will be far fewer failures at five and
ten weeks than we have had to deal with before.
VII. Student Athletic Academic Performance
Every
five weeks athletes with failing grades will receive two-week report forms
(Academic Eligibility Rubric) from the Athletic Director, which must be
completed by the student’s teachers.
·
If
the student is failing one course, the rubric will be completed by the teac=
her,
but there is no game penalty.
·
If
the student is failing two courses, he or she must make every effort to
improve. He or she must atten=
d at
least three after school study sessions in that two-week period, either wit=
h a
teacher or in conjunction with detention.&=
nbsp;
The student must be doing work during these sessions.
·
If,
after the two weeks, teachers indicate by using the rubric that no effort is
being shown to improve the grades in at least one of the courses, the stude=
nt
must serve a one game suspension, effective at the next scheduled game.
·
If
a student is failing three or more courses, he or she must show effort in at
least two of the courses as shown on the rubric or the student will be remo=
ved
from the team.

VIII.
Detention
a.&n=
bsp;
Athletes that are on detention must s=
erve
detention at their assigned time and then may be allowed to practice or pla=
y in
the contest if the coach so desires.

Student’s
Rights
In order to protect
the athlete’s rights, the following procedures will be followed where
suspension from the team for five days or less is punishment.

The athlete will be notified by the c=
oach
of reasons for the suspension.
b.&n=
bsp;
Parents will be notified of the
suspension.
c.&n=
bsp;
The student has the right to an infor=
mal
hearing with the High School Principal, and may at this time, present his/h=
er
side of the matter.
d.&n=
bsp;
Final decision concerning the suspens=
ion
rests with the High School Principal.
If the suspension =
is
for more than five days, the following procedure is to be followed:
1)&n=
bsp;
The athlete will be notified by the H=
igh
School Principal of the reason for the suspension.
2)&n=
bsp;
Parents of the athlete will be advise=
d as
to the reason and length of suspension/dismissal.
3)&n=
bsp;
The athlete has a right to a hearing =
with
the Superintendent of Schools with his/her parents. He/She has the right to present ev=
idence
on his/her behalf.
4)&n=
bsp;
The final decision rests with the
Superintendent of Schools.
This code will be implemented and enforced as
administratively feasible.

Awards/Points
After
successful completion of a sports season, each team member is eligible to
receive a certificate of recognition, an award, and five points towards the
earning of a sports jacket, watch, or senior plaque.
Points
earned toward the varsity jacket or senior plaque can only be earned at

an athlete will receive an athletic watch for playing on twelve teams.

ing

All
rules that apply to the athletes also apply to the manager.
XII.=
General
Expectations
a.&n=
bsp;
Missed practices may result in a play=
er
not participating in the next game.
b.&n=
bsp;
Any coach who is using the gym or
practice area has authority over that area for the scheduled practice period
and directives or requests made by the coach over the use of these areas mu=
st
be adhered to. Failure to com=
ply
may mean one-game suspension.
c.&n=
bsp;
Athletes will enter the gym or practi=
ce
area only at the appointed time and only with a coach present. When practice is over, athletes are
expected to leave immediately.
d.&n=
bsp;
The coaching staff is entitled to the
respect of all athletes.
Communication of disrespect to coaches may result in suspension or
dismissal from the team.
e.&n=
bsp;
All athletes and cheerleaders shall be
expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner in the locker rooms,
gymnasium, and playing fields, both home and away. Such things as vandalism and any
dangerous actions are strictly forbidden.

Students shall conduct themselves in =
an
orderly manner on the team bus at all times. Any student conducting themselves =
in
less than an orderly manner on the bus may be suspended or dismissed from t=
he
team as determined by the coach, Athletic Director, and High School
Principal. The same rules app=

All players and cheerleaders will ride
the bus to away games. All pl=
ayers
and cheerleaders will ride the bus back after the game unless their parents
request that the student ride home with them. The coach is to ensure that the
student's parents are present, and he/she is to ride home with them.

All student athletes shall be fully
responsible for any and all equipment or clothing that is issued to them. A=
ny
equipment or clothing not returned shall be paid for by the student or
parents. All equipment is to =
be
handed in within one calendar week after the end of the season. Failure to comply will result in
ineligibility for the next season until the obligation is fulfilled.

All team members will have a Bus
Permission Form for Athletes in file in the office to be allowed to ride sc=
hool
transportation.

Transportation will be provided by sc=
hool
bus unless parent signs Transportation Release Form or office has been
contacted and given permission for other party to transport a student.

Bus seating arrangements for all away
games shall require separate seating for boys and girls. Coaches will have complete authori=
ty to
arrange seating. Failure to c=

may result in a one-game suspension.

CODE OF BEHAVIOR FOR SPECTATORS OR FANS
1. Spectators are an
important part of the game and should at all times conform to accepted
standards of good sportsmanship and behavior.
2. Spectators should =

time respect officials, visiting coaches, players, and cheerleaders as gues=

in the community and extend all courtesies to them.
3. Enthusiastic and w=
holesome
cheering for one’s own team is encouraged.
4. Booing, whistling,
stamping of the feet, and disrespectful remarks should be avoided.
5. Horns, noisemakers=
and
bells are discouraged . . . but if used with a cheer should be used at
appropriate times (i.e., when time has been called by one team or the other=
and
there is a complete stoppage in play).
6. Pep Bands, under t=
he
supervision of school personnel, may play when play is completely stopped.<=

9. Spectators should
encourage each other to observe this Code of Ethics. Those who do not respond should be
reported to the proper school authorities. Immediately. 10. Spectators should
observe and obey the rules and regulations of the school concerning smoking,
food and soft drink consumption, littering, use of lavatory facilities and

in athletics is a privilege, with many rules and regulations that must be
adhered to or participation will be denied. It is very important that both the
parents and students understand the need for these rules. Breaking the rules will result in
disciplinary action and may result in the Maximum Penalty of suspension fro=
