Mrs. Lisa Smith

My program involves both reading and writing.  The morning is devoted to reading.  During this time I work with children at the 1st grade level in small groups.  At the 2nd grade level I meet with small assigned groups.

In our groups the children are encouraged to use both word and comprehension strategies as they hone their reading skills.  The use of sign language is also incorporated at this time.  The connection between reading and writing is stressed as the children complete written activities and projects.

In grades K & 1, the afternoon is our writing time.  We work in a Writers' Workshop format.  The children at the K-level are guided from the formation of words, to beginning sentences, on to simple stories.

At the 1st grade level, the children are again given the opportunity to practice word formation using more complex sounds.  Their sentences and stories become more detailed.  Near the end of the year the children publish their favorite story.  They are guided through all the steps an author must follow to publication.  Then they share their books.

At the 2nd grade level our time is divided between Writers' Workshop and Readers' Workshop.  During Writers' Workshop time the children are guided to more complex and detailed story structure.  The children work at their own pace as they are guided through the writing process.  Each child publishes at least one book and may publish more if time allows.

The other three days of the six day cycle are used for Readers' Workshop.  During these times the children are guided to read books that are "just right" for them.  This gives them the opportunity to practice their reading strategies.  The children also give written and oral responses to the books they have read.

I am very happy to be working with your children.  If you have any questions please contact me at lsmith@hcsk12.org
