Glances, March 2008  From the Interim 6-12 Principal

What……ANOTHER building project?

It seems like yesterday that we were shoulder deep in concrete block and dust completing the building project that added the library, the senior high wing, put in a new heating system, replaced the roofs, put a wood floor in the gym and renovated space in the building.  That happened just before I retired from HCS in 2003.  But time has a way of playing tricks on us.  It also seems like yesterday that I attended my first faculty meeting at HCS in the old cafeteria with Mr. Betrus, right about where Stewart Shops’ back door stands today.

Time slips away; buildings get older; needs change; technology shows us another way; more students pass through the doors and over the floors.  That is what is happening to the current Harrisville Central School building.  The cornerstone of the library reads 2001 and that was seven years ago.  Things get old and wear out.

The Board of Education and Mr. Waters are asking you to approve a plan to update the building for our students.  Certain areas need renovation and ‘fixing what’s broke’.  Certain classrooms need to be added so we can better take care of all our students, especially those who now go to other schools for their programs.  A pre-kindergarten program, planned when the 2001 building project was done, needs to be implemented.  And we need to make the best possible use of the space we already have.

The proposed renovation and building project does all that and more.  It allows the school and village to partner to provide more efficient vehicle fueling services and it will cost the local taxpayer very little.  So, yes, there is another building project.  I believe it is needed and will offer good value for the money spent.

I urge you to find out about the project on March 10 and consider the needs of our kids when you vote in March 27.
